Question 77408: Can someone please help me with these word problems for me?
1) Morgan has a board that is 98 inches long. He wishes to cut the board into two pieces so that one piece will be 10 inches longer that the other. What is the length of each piece?
2) Jose is 3 years less than 4 times as old as his daughter. If the sum of their ages is 37 years, how old is Jose?
3) One side of a triangle is 4 meters longer than the shortest side. The third side is twice the length of the shortest side. If the perimeter of the triangle is 44 meters, find the lengths of the three sides of the triangle. (P=a+b+c)

You can put this solution on YOUR website! 1) Morgan has a board that is 98 inches long. He wishes to cut the board into two pieces so that one piece will be 10 inches longer that the other. What is the length of each piece?
:
Let the shorter piece = x; then the longer piece = (x+10), right?
Make an equation from this:
:
Short piece + long piece = 98
x + (x+10) = 98
2x + 10 = 98
2x = 98 - 10
2x = 88
x = 44 inches, the short piece
:
Long piece = 44 + 10 = 54 inches, the long piece
:
Check: 44 + 54 = 98
:
:
2)Write just what it says. J = Jose age, d = his daughter's age
"Jose is 3 years less than 4 times as old as his daughter." ("is" means =)
J = 4d - 3
;
:If the sum of their ages is 37 years,"
J + d = 37
:
how old is Jose?
Substitute (4d - 3) for J in the equation; J + d = 37, find d
(4d - 3) + d = 37
5d = 37 + 3; added 3 to both sides
5d = 40
d = 40/5;divided both side by 5
d = 8 yrs old
:
Now you substitute 8 for d in (J + d) = 37, and find J
Check the solutions using J = 4d - 3

3) One side of a triangle is 4 meters longer than the shortest side. The third side is twice the length of the shortest side. If the perimeter of the triangle is 44 meters, find the lengths of the three sides of the triangle. (P=a+b+c)
:
Let x = length of the shortest side:
:
Write an expression just like it says:
"One side of a triangle is 4 meters longer than the shortest side."
one side = (x + 4)
"The third side is twice the length of the shortest side."
Third side = 2x
:
It gives the perimeter as 44 meters:
x + (x+4) + 2x = 44
4x + 4 = 44
4x = 44 - 4; subtracted 4 from both sides
4x = 40
x = 40/4
x = 10 meters
:
Using the expressions we found, you can find the other two sides,
Check that all 3 add up to 44
:
Did all this make sense to you? Any questions?
