Question 772402: I have been trying to work out this question for 2 hours!
Anna went on a shopping spree. She spent $24- of her pocket money on a dress and 20% of the remainder on a shirt. She still had 2/3 of her money left. How much did she have before she began spending?
I tried with $150- but was out by 0.80. It has been extremely frustrating and my assignment is due tomorrow.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let x be Anna's money, before she began shopping
She spent $24, the remainder is $%28x-24%29. She spent 20% of the remainder on a shirt, hence she pent on a shirt $0.2%28x-24%29. Therefore after shopping Anna had x-24-0.2%28x-24%29=0.8%28x-24%29. But after shopping she still had 2/3 of her money left, 2%2F3 form x is %282%2F3%29x. The equation is
0.8%28x-24%29=%282%2F3%29x
0.8x-19.2=%282%2F3%29x
0.8x-%282%2F3%29x=19.2
%282%2F15%29x=19.2 divide by 2%2F15
x=144
Anna had $144 before she began shopping
