Question 77174: A rectangular solid has a base with length 10 cm and width 9 cm. If the volume of the solid is 270 cm3, find the height of the solid. (Hint: The volume of a rectangular solid is given by V = LWH.)
Confuse on cm3...need help in solving...thanks.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let H=height of the solid
We are told that V=LWH=270 cm^3
We are also told that the length (L) is 10 cm and the width (W) is 9 cm
So our equation to solve is:
(10 cm)(9 cm)(H)=270 cm^3 or
90 cm^2(H)=270 cm^3 divide both sides by 90 cm^2
H=(270 cm^3/90 cm^2)=3 cm--------------answer
x*x*x=x^3
cm*cm*cm=cm^3 which is a volume
cm*cm=cm^2 which is an area
Keeping track of your dimensions (lbs, grams, cm, miles, seconds, feet, etc.)in a problem is important and can frequently help to determine if you have worked the problem correctly. For example, in the above problem, we knew that the Height should be cm and as you can see, we ended up with cm^3/cm^2 which gives us cm, the correct dimension for H in this problem. If we had come out with cm^2, then we would quickly know that we had made a mistake somewhere.

Hope this helps---ptaylor
