Use Quadratic Formula:
x = [-5 +- sqrt(25-4*2*-17)]/4
------
x = [-5 +- sqrt(136)]/4
------
x = [-5 +- 2sqrt(34)]/4
---
x = (-5/4)+(1/2)sqrt(34)
OR
x = (-5/4)-(1/2)sqrt(34)
