Question 768088: A high school marching band of 205 students went to a competition. They took 9 vehicles, some cars and some buses. Find the number of cars and the number of buses they took if each car holds 5 students and each bus hold 45 students.
Answer by algebrahouse.com(1659) About Me  (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
x = number of cars taken
9 - x = number of buses taken {they took 9 total vehicles}

5x + 45(9 - x) = 205 {number of vehicles times number of people per vehicle equals total people}
5x + 405 - 45x = 205 {used distributive property}
-40x + 405 = 205 {combined like terms}
-40x = -200 {subtracted 405 from each side}
x = 5 cars {divided each side by -40}
9 - x = 4 buses {substituted 5, in for x, into 9 - x}

They took 5 cars and 4 buses.
