Question 768062: An electrician cuts a 25 ft piece of wire into two pieces. One piece is 6 ft longer than the other. How long are the pieces?
Answer by algebrahouse.com(1659) About Me  (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
x = one piece
x + 6 = other piece {one piece is 6 ft longer than the other}

x + x + 6 = 25 {the two pieces add up to the total 25 ft piece}
2x + 6 = 25 {combined like terms}
2x = 19 {subtracted 5 from each side}
x = 9.5 ft {divided each side by 2}
x + 6 = 15.5 ft {substituted 9.5, in for x, into x + 6}

The two pieces are 9.5 ft and 15.5 ft
