Question 767352: Dear Sir/Madam,
A pleasant day! can you please help me with this problem, guide me in finding the value asked. Here is the problem: Find the value of k so that the equation 4x^2+kx+6=0, has one root of -2
Thank you very much for your help! Found 2 solutions by rothauserc, solver91311:Answer by rothauserc(4718) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! 4x^2+kx+6=0
the factors satisfying the constraint that one of the solutions is x = -2 are
=============================================================================
(4x+3) * (x+2) = 0
x = -2 or -3/4
============================================================================
multiplying the factors we get
4x^2 +11x +6 = 0
k = 11
============================================================================
let's now check the answer x=-2 with k=11 above
4*(-2)^2 + 11*(-2) +6 = 0
16 -22 +6 = 0
22 -22 = 0
x=-2 with k=11 checks out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
============================================================================
the key here is that the problem does not say that -2 is the ONLY solution
