Question 766977: a collection of 34 coins consist of dimes and nickels. the total value is 2.05. how many dimes are there

 Answer by algebrahouse.com(1659)      (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! x = number of dimes
34 - x = number of nickels {there are 34 total coins}

0.1x + 0.05(34 - x) = 2.05 {value of coin times number of coins equals total value}
0.1x + 1.7 - 0.05x = 2.05 {used distributive property}
0.05x + 1.7 = 2.05 {combined like terms}
0.05x = 0.35 {subtracted 1.7 from each side}
x = 7 {divided each side by 0.05}
34 - x = 27 {substituted 7, in for x, into 34 - x}

7 dimes and 27 nickels
