Question 765570: I will really appreciate your help with this problem. Thanks.
The data given below are the number of absences for students in a college class and the student's final grade.
Number of absences x 10 12 2 0 8 5
Final grade y 70 65 96 94 75 82
Find the value of the correlation coefficient r. Discuss the type of relationship that appears to exist between the number of absences x and a student's final grade y.
Test the significance of the correlation coefficient using alpha=0.05.
H0: P=0(No relationship exist between number of absences and final grade)
Ha: p not equal to 0(A relationship exists between number of absences and final grade)

You can put this solution on YOUR website! The data given below are the number of absences for students in a college class and the student's final grade.
Number of absences x 10 12 2 0 8 5
Final grade::::::: y 70 65 96 94 75 82
Find the value of the correlation coefficient r. Discuss the type of relationship that appears to exist between the number of absences x and a student's final grade y.
I used my TI-84 to get r = -0.9807
Type: Inverse::: As # of absences goes up, final grade goes down.
===================================================================
Test the significance of the correlation coefficient using alpha=0.05.
H0: rho=0(No relationship exist between number of absences and final grade)
Ha: rho # 0(A relationship exists between number of absences and final grade)
-------
Critical value from Table A-6:::: 0.811
Note:: |r| = 0.9807
---
Since |r| > critical value, reject Ho.
---
A significant linear relationship exixts at the 5% level of confidence.
