The U.S. senate has 100 members. after a certain election, there were 4 more Democrats than Republicans, with no other parties represented. How many members of each party were there in the Senate?
----
Let # of Rupublicans be "x'
Then # of Democrats is "x+4"
-----------------
Equation:
x + (x+4) = 100
2x = 96
x = 48 (# of Reps)
x+4 = 52 (# of Dems)

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let +x+ = number of Republicans
+x+%2B+4+ = number of Democrats
------------
+x+%2B+x+%2B+4+=+100+
+2x+=+100+-+4+
+2x+=+96+
+x+=+48+
+x+%2B+4+=+52+
There are 52 Democrats and 48 Republicans
