You can put this solution on YOUR website!
A jet takes 8 hours to travel a distance of 6272 against the wind.
The return trip takes 7 hours with the wind.
What is the rate of the jet in still air and what is the rate of
the wind?
:
Let s = the rate of the jet in still air
Let w = the rate of the wind
then
(s-w) = ground speed against the wind
(s+w) = ground speed with the wind
:
Write a distance equation for each way (dist = speed * time
8(s-w) = 6272
7(s+w) = 6272
We can simplify both equations, divide the 1st by 8, the 2nd by 7
s - w = 784
s + w = 896
-------------adding eliminates w find s
2s = 1680
s = 1680/2
s = 840 jet speed in still air
and you can find the rate of the wind
840 + w = 896
