Question 763571: in a cricket game dhoni is out for 52 runs which raises his average from 36 to 37.how many runs would be have to score is that innings(in which he scored 52) to raise his average to 39: Answer by ramkikk66(644) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! We have to solve this problem in 2 parts.
Part 1:
We don't know how many innings Dhoni has played before this game - so let us find that out first.
Let us say he has played n innings till now, to get an average of 36.
So he has scored a total of (36*n) till now. After the current game, the number of innings is (n+1) and his total is (36*n + 52), while the average is 37.
Hence
Simplifying through cross multiplication
Subtracting 36*n and 37 from both sides
So he has played 15 innings till now, and including the current game the total number of innings is 16.
Part 2: To find out how much he should have scored in the current 16th game to get an average of 39.
To have an average of 39 in 16 innings, he should score a total of (39*16) = 624 runs.
Till the 15 games, he has scored (36*15) = 480 runs (remember that his average is 36 till now)
So to bring up his average to 39, he should score (624 - 480) = runs in the current game.
