Nickel = x
Quarter = y
x + y = 35...1
5x + 25y = 675...2
Multiply (1) by 5
5x + 5y = 175...3
5x + 25y = 675..2
Subtract (3) from (2)
20y = 500
y = 25
Substitute y = 25 into (1)
x + y = 35
x + 25 = 35
x = 35 - 25
x = 10
Therefore Thomas has 10 nickels
and 25 quarters.
