Question 760725: please show me step by step how to solve these simultaneous equations using the substitution method :
x-8=2y and x+y=-2 Answer by ramkikk66(644) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! ---> equation (1) ---> equation (2)
For substitution, we have to express x in terms of y. In the 1st equation, let us get rid of the term "8" on the left hand side, to get x alone. To do this, we have to add 8 to both sides of the equation (because there is a "-8" on the left side, adding 8 will cancel it out)
From (1), by adding 8 to both sides, we get
---> equation(3)
Now that we know that x = 2y + 8, we substitute for x in equation (2)
-> because x = 2y + 8
Simplifying
---> equation(4)
Subtract 8 from both sides (to get rid of the +8 on the left side)
Now that we know y, we can get the value of x from (3)
