Question 759005: m=(2,-2)is the mid point of the line segment joining A=(-1,-6)and B=(x,y), find B
Answer by malglu(63) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! midpoint of a line is the x co-ordinate of one point plus the x co-ordinate of the other, all divided by 2; and the same for the y co-ordinates.
so, here we have
x + (-1) all divided by 2, and y + (-6) all divided by 2
and we know that this corresponds to (2, -2)
therefore the x co -ordinate of the midpoint is
(x-1)didvided by 2 = 2. make x the subject, and you get x= 5
for the y co=ordinate you have
(y-6) divided by 2 = -2. make y the subject and you get y=2
