Question 758638: I have a motion Q:
Two runners run around a circular track that is 480 meters long. The faster runner runs one lap 20 seconds shorter. They meet after 240 seconds. What is the speed of each runner? Answer by lwsshak3(11628) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! Two runners run around a circular track that is 480 meters long. The faster runner runs one lap 20 seconds shorter. They meet after 240 seconds. What is the speed of each runner?

Each time both runners complete a lap, the slow runner falls behind the faster runner by 20 seconds. The problem is to find how many laps must be completed for the slower runner to fall behind one lap. Since they run the same amount of time of 240 seconds, the faster runner completed 240/20=12 laps or traveled 12*480=5760 m. During this time the slower runner fell back 240 seconds and completed 11 laps or 11*480=5280 m.
speed of faster runner=5760m/240sec=24 m/sec
speed of slower runner=5280m/240sec=22 m/sec
