Question 755632: I have a question which relates to odds. I went to Alton Towers the other day and when you buy a meal in the restaurant you are asked to pick a number between 1 and 90. You then hit a random number generating machine. If you get the number correct then you win your meal.
A friend of mine said that if 90 people go through there is a 1 in 90 chance of someone winning. I was skeptical, surely its a 1 in 90 chance if they all picked the same number. But if each person chooses randomly then the chances of 1 of the 90 people winning is less.
So to simplify-
90 people go through the checkout, each choose a random number between 1 and 90, a machine generates a random number between 1 and 90, what are the odds of someone guessing the number correctly.
Thankyou for your input.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
90 people go through the checkout, each choose a random number between 1 and 90, a machine generates a random number between 1 and 90, what are the odds of someone guessing the number correctly.
----
Probability you win is 1/90
Probability you lose is 89/90
---
Odds For you winning = (1/90)/(89/90) = 1:89
Odds Against you winning = (89/90)/(1/90) = 89:1
