Question 753430: A boy has a handful of dimes and quarters. He counted the number of coins and found there are 15 coins in all. He figured out the value of the coins together to be $3.00. How many dimes and quarters does the boy have Answer by Cromlix(4381) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! x = dimes, y = quarters
x + y = 15....1
10x + 25y = 300...2
Multiply (1) by 25
25x + 25y = 375 ...3
10x + 25y = 300 ...2
Subtract (2) from (3)
15x = 75
x = 75/15
x = 5
Substitute x = 5 into
Equation (1)
x + y = 15
5 + y = 15
y = 15 - 5
y = 10
Therefore there are:
5 dimes and 10 quarters
Hope this helps
