Question 752509: If a square is enlarged to a rectangle by lengthening one pair of sides 2 cm and the other pain of sides 3 cm. The area is increased by 36 cm^2 . Find the dimensions of the original square.
Can you please help me out? Thanks so much in advance:)
Can you please show the steps it would really help me understand:)

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let d = the distance between two consecutive endpoints of the original square.

area is d%5E2.

Lengthening:
%28d%2B2%29%28d%2B3%29=-d%5E2%2B36

We want to find d.

d%5E2%2B%28d%2B2%29%28d%2B3%29-36=0
You will have to simplify this. You will have a quadratic equation and its solution should be routine; either factoring or solution to quadratic formula.

.
.
looks like d%5E2%2Bd%5E2%2B5d%2B6-36=0
highlight%282d%5E2%2B5d-30=0%29 and though tried seems not factorable.
Use quadratic equation solution.
