Question 750843: A line segment GH has equation 3x+2y=15
(i) determine the gradient of GH
(ii) Another line segment, JK, is perpendicular to GH and passes through the point (4,1). Determine the equation of the line JK.If JK Answer by Cromlix(4381) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! Sort the equation into y = mx + c
3x + 2y = 15 => y = -3/2x + 15/2
i) Gradient of GH is -3/2.
ii)If JK is perpendicular to GH
then JK's gradient = 2/3
Lines that are perpendicular
to other lines have gradients
that multiply together to give
-1. (m1xm2=-1)
Using y - b = m(x - a) and point (4,1)
y - 1 = 2/3(x - 1)
y = 2/3x - 2/3 + 1
y = 2/3x + 1/3
or by multiplying throughout
by 3
3y = 2x + 1
Hope this helps
