Let x represent Alicia's age now.
Adam's age would be x-15
In 6 years, Alicia will be x+6 and Adam will be x-15+6 or x-9.
At that time, Alicia will be twice as old as Adam.
Thus, 2 times Adam's age should be equal to Alicia's age:
2%28x-9%29=x%2B6
Distribute:
2x-18=x%2B6
Subtract x from both sides:
x-18=6
Add 18 to both sides:
x=24
Adam's age was represented by x-15, so plug in 24 for x:
24-15
9
Adam is 9 years old.
