You can put this solution on YOUR website!
A 72-inch board is cut into 3 pieces. The second piece is twice the first and the third is 8 inches shorter than the first. Find the numbers.
-----
Equations:
a + b + c = 72
b = 2a
c = a-8
-----
Substitute for "b" and for "c" and solve for "a":
a + (2a) + (a-8) = 72
------
4a = 80
a = 20 inches
---
b = 2a = 40 inches
----
c = a-8 = 12 inches
