You can put this solution on YOUR website!
1) John, twelve years old, is three times as old as his brother. How old will John be when he is as old as his brother?
That's a silly question. His brother is younger, only 4 years old. So John
 will never be 4 years old if he's already 12.

2)Mary was both 13th highest and 13th lowest in a spelling contest. How many people were in the contest?
There were 12 above her and 12 below her. That's 24 in the contest other than
Mary. So Mary makes it 25.

Tunde's mother sent him to the store to get 9 large cans of peaches. Tunde could only carry 2 cans at a time. How many trips to the store did Tunde have to make?
He went to the store 5 times.

He went the first time and brought home cans #1 and #2
He went a second time and brought home cans #3 and #4
He went a third time and brought home cans #5 and #6
He went a fourth time and brought home cans #7 and #8
He went a fifth time and brought home can #9.

4) The price of a puzzle was cut 20% for a trade fair event. By what percentage must the puzzle item be increased to again sell it at the original price?
It doesn't matter what it cost. Suppose it originally cost $100. Then it was
cut 20% down to $80

$80 + %28matrix%284%2C1%2C%0D%0A%0D%0AWhat%2C+fraction%2C+of%2C+%22%2480%3F%22%29%29 = $100

80 + 80x = 100
     80x = 20
       x = 20%2F80 = 1%2F4, changed to percent, 25%

5)If when the selling price is doubled, the profit triples, what is the profit
percent?

Profit percent is profit%2Fcost%22%22%2A%22%22100%

 (Selling price) - (Cost) = (Profit)
2(Selling price) - (Cost) = 3(Profit)

 S - C = P
2S - C = 3P

Multiply the first equation through by -2 to eliminate S

-2S + 2C = -2P
 2S -  C =  3P
--------------
       C = P

Divide both sides by C

       1 = P%2FC

So Profit percent is profit%2Fcost%22%22%2A%22%22100% = 1·100% = 100%
