I know it will be a simultaneous equation, but I'm struggling to understand the two equations. So far I've done x-5=5(y-5)
x+8=3(y+8)
Now I'm not sure what to do.

You made the 2 eqns, that's where most people have problems.
x-5=5(y-5)
x+8=3(y+8)
-----
x - 5 = 5y - 25
x + 8 = 3y + 24
------------------ Subtract
-13 = 2y - 49
2y = 36
y = 18
-------
x = 70
