Let the age of Mario be n + 4
Let the age of Pedro be n

Therefore:
n + 4 + n = 40
2n + 4 = 40
Subtract 4 from each side of the equation.
2n = 36
Divide each side by 2
n = 18
n + 4 = 18 + 4 = 22


Answer:
Mario is 22 years old and Pedro is 18 years old.
