: Well first of all, I am working on reasoning strategies and i am on problem 4. The word problem that I am working on says: You have two pails, one that will hold 4qt. and one that will hold 9qt. There are no markings on either pail to indicate smaller quantities. How can you measure out 6qt. using these two pails? ( assume there is an unlimited amount of water).
What I was thinking of was to fill up the 9qt. pail all the way and pour it into the 4qt. pail. Once you have pored the water into the 4qt. pail, you would be left with 5qt. in the 9qt. pail, but my question is how would I get the other qt. to get 6qts. in total. This question is from textbook

FILL THE 4 GAL BUCKET TWICE & POUR IT INTO THE 9 GALLON BUCKET.
NOW FILLTHE 4 GALLON BUCKET ONCE MORE POURING 1 GALLON TO FILL THE 9 GALLON BUCKET.
YOU NOW HAVE 3 GALLONS IN THE 4 GALLON BUCKET.
EMPTY THE 9 GALLON BUCKET. POUR THE 3 GALLONS INTO THE 9 GALLON BUCKET.
REFILL THE 4 GALLON BUSKET & POUR IT INTO THE 9 GALLON BUCKET.
YOU NOW HAVE 7 GALLONS IN THE 9 GALLON BUCKET.
REFILL THE 4 GALLON BUCKET.
EMPOTY 2 GALLONS FROM THE 4 GALLON BUCKET TO FILL THE 9 GALLON BUCKET.
YOU NOW HAVE 2 GALLONS LEFT IN THE 4 GALLON BUCKET.
EMPTY THE 9 GALLON BUCKET.
EMPTY THE 2 GALLONS OF WATER INTO THE 9 GALLON BUCKET.
REFILL THE 4 GALLON BUCKET AND ADD IT TO THE 2 ALREADY IN THE 9 GALLON BUCKET THUS WE NOW HAVE (2+4=6) GALLONS IN THE 9 GALLON BUCKET.
