I did try this, by using proportions, and then I got 6.6 repeating, and I'm just totally confused! Thanks for your help :)

He got 6 wrong, so he got 40-6 = 34 correct

part/whole = percent/100

34/40 = x/100

34*100 = 40x

3400 = 40x

3400/40 = x

85 = x

x = 85

So he got 85%
