You can put this solution on YOUR website!
we are given the two equations
x+4y=5
4x-2y=11
and we are asked to solve for x and y
from the first equation we have x = 5 - 4y
substitute for x in the second equation and we have
4*(5-4y) - 2y = 11
20-16y-2y = 11
-18y = -9 and
y = 1/2 and x = 3 from equation 1

This is how substitution works:
(1) +x+%2B+4y+=+5+
Subtract +4y+ from both sides
(1) +x+=+-4y+%2B+5+
--------------------
Plug this expression for +x+ into (2)
(2) +4x+-+2y+=+11+
(2) +4%2A%28+-4y+%2B+5+%29+-+2y+=+11+
(2) +-16y+%2B+20+-+2y+=+11+
(2) +-18y+=+11+-20+
(2) +-18y+=+-9+
(2) +y+=+1%2F2+
--------------
Plug this result back into (1) or (2)
(1) +x+%2B+4y+=+5+
(1) +x+%2B+4%2A%281%2F2%29+=+5+
(1) +x+%2B+2+=+5+
(1) +x+=+3+
-------------
check the solutions,
(2) +4x+-+2y+=+11+
(2) +4%2A3+-+2%2A%281%2F2%29+=+11+
(2) +12+-+1+=+11+
(2) +11+=+11+
OK
(1) +x+%2B+4y+=+5+
(1) +3+%2B+4%2A%281%2F2%29+=+5+
(1) +3+%2B+2+=+5+
(1) +5=5+
OK
