A class of 19 students had an average on a mathematics test of 90 points. The 12 girls in the class scored 1,317 points. How many points did the 7 boys score?
Since there were 19 students, then total amount of points scored = 19 * 90, or 1,710
Since the girls scored 1,317 of the 1,710 points, then the boys scored 1,710 – 1,317, or  points.
