what number must be added to both the numerator and denominator of the fraction (5/23) to give a fraction equal to (1/3).
:
Write it:
%28%28x%2B5%29%29%2F%28%28x%2B23%29%29 = 1%2F3
:
Cross multiply:
3(x+5) = 1(x+23
:
3x + 15 = x + 23
:
3x -x = 23 - 15
2x = 8
x = 4 has to be added:
:
:
Check, add 4 to both numerator and denominator: 9/27 = 1/3

-------
Let the number be "x".
Then:
(5+x)/(23+x) = 1/3
Cross multiply to get:
3(5+x) = 1(23+x)
15+3x = 23+x
2x=8
x=4
That is the number you want.
