Question 734495: Okay, for a word problem, I have to make an expression for the width.(the length is 50 and the width is 10) So I used x2 + 60x + 500 and I got x+50 and x+10. The expression I am using for the width is x+10. How can put x+10 in an equation? The equation has to equal 500. All I need is the written out equation and an explanation. I need this answer by Sunday, 4/7/13.Thank you!

for a rectangular region of perimeter 500 feet we have the following formula
500 = 2x + 2y where x is length and y is width
suppose we have a square ( all squares are rectangles but all rectangles are not squares)
then we have
500 = 4x or x = 125 and the area is 125 * 125 = 15625 square feet
a second possibility is
500 = 200 + 300 (x=100, y = 150) and the area is 100 * 150 or 15000 square feet
a third possibility is
500 = 400 + 100 (x=200, y=50) and the area is 10000 square feet
