You can put this solution on YOUR website!

Let x= number of dimes
Then 26-x=number of nickels
He receives 2 more nickels--------------(26-x)+2=(28-x)
He loses 1/3 of his dimes ------------------x-(1/3)x=(2/3)x
so:
Now lets deal in pennies
5(28-x)+10((2/3)x)=170 simplify
140-5x+(20/3)x=170 Multiply both sides by 3
420-15x+20x=510 subtract 420 from both sides
-15x+20x=510-420 collect like terms
5x=90 divide both sides by 5
x=18-----------------------------------------------number of dimes
26-x=26-18=8------------------------------------number of nickels

ck
receives 2 more nickels---------------8+2=10
Loses 1/3 of his dimes-------18-18/3=18-6=12 dimes
10*5+12*10=170
50+120=170
170=170
