Question 731618: Twenty pound of dried fruit mix contained prunes worth $3.50 a pound and apricots worth $2.95 a pound. How many pounds of each did the mix contain if the total value of the mix was $66.15? Answer by mananth(16946) (Show Source):
1.00 x + 1.00 y = 20.00 .............1
Total value
3.50 x + 2.95 y = 66.15 .............2
Eliminate y
multiply (1)by -2.95
Multiply (2) by 1.00
-2.95 x -2.95 y = -59.00
3.50 x + 2.95 y = 66.15
Add the two equations
0.55 x = 7.15
/ 0.55
x = 13.00
plug value of x in (1)
1.00 x + 1.00 y = 20.00
13.00 + y = 20.00
y = 20.00 -13.00
y = 7.00
y = 7.00
x= 13.00 pounds of prunes
y= 7.00 pounds of no of mechanics
