Question 72956: set up and solve: There are 24 pieces of fruit in a basket. There are twice as many apples as pears. There were four fewer oranges than pears. How many of each fruit were in the basket? Answer by funmath(2933) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! set up and solve: There are 24 pieces of fruit in a basket. There are twice as many apples as pears. There were four fewer oranges than pears. How many of each fruit were in the basket?
Let pears be: x
Then apples are:2x
Then oranges are: x-4
The total is: 24
pears+apples+oranges=total
Problem to solve is:
(x)+(2x)+(x-4)=24
x+2x+x-4=24
4x-4=24
4x-4+4=24+4
4x=28
4x/4=28/4
x=7
Pears: x=7
Apples: 2x=2(7)=14
Oranges: x-4=7-4=3
:
Sanity check, if you add all the fruit together, do you get 24?
7+14+3=24 Yes!!!!
Happy Calculating!!!!
