Question 728903: a jet flies along a straight path from Toronto to Montreal and back again. The straight line distance between these cities is 540km. on Monday, the jet made the round trip when there was no wind. on friday it made the round trip when there was a constant wind blowing from Toronto to Montreal at 80km/h in still air, the jet travels at a constant speed. write the expressions for the length of time required to fly from Toronto to Montreal. determine which trip takes less time

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Monday
----------
Toronto to Montreal time = distance / speed = 540/x
Round trip 540/x + 540/x
= 1080/x...................(1)

Friday
wind speed = 80 km/h
with wind time = 540/(x+80)
Against wind time = 540/(x-80)
Total time = 540/(x+80)+540/(x-80)
540(x-80)+540(x+80)/ (x+80)(x-80)= time for round trip
Simplify
1080x/((x+80)(x-80)= time.................(2)
Since the numerator is same and the denominator is bigger in (2) time taken is less on Friday for the round trip
