"Traveling for 3 hours into a steady headwind a jet traveled 1650 miles. If the jet were flying with the same wind it could have gone 1300 miles in only 2 hours. Find the rate of the jet in calm air and the rate if the wind." Answer by mananth(16946) (Show Source):
Distance against 1650 miles distance with 1300 miles
t=d/r against wind -
1650 / ( x - y )= 3
3 ( x - y ) = 1650
3 x - 3 y = 1650 ....................1
1300 / ( x + y )= 2
2 ( x + y ) = 1300
2 x + 2 y = 1300 ...............2
Multiply (1) by 1
Multiply (2) by 1
we get
3 x + -3 y = 1650
2 x + 2 y = 1300
5 x = 2950
/ 5
x = 590.00 mph
plug value of x in (1) y
3 x -3 y = 1650
1770 -3 -1770 = 1650
-3 y = 1650
-3 y = -120 mph
y = 40.00
Plane speed 590.00 mph
wind speed 40.00 mph
