y - 5x = 3

If you add these two equations you get:
-y=-2
y=2
-----------
Substitute that back to solve for "x":
2-5x=3
-5x=1
x=-1/5
------
Check the solution in the other equation:
5(-1/5) - 2(2) = -5
-1 - 4 = -5
-5=-5
