b + g = 94 and b = 4g + 9 (is means =, four times the number means multiply by 4, and 9 more than means add 9.)


Substitute 4g+9 for b in the first equation, because the second equation indicates that's what b =.


4g + 9 + g = 94 ---> 5g = 85 (added the g's, and subtracted 9 from both sides).


g = 17 (divided both sides by 5.)


b+17=94 ---> b = 77 (subtracted 17 from both sides).
