Question 720052: A bird is flying at 22 miles per hour at a bearing of N18 degrees W. After flying for 1/2 hour, it lands on a tree to rest. When it takes off again it flies at 18 mph at a bearing of S72 degrees W for 20 minutes and then lands a telephone pole. Find the bearing and distance to the original point of departure.

You can put this solution on YOUR website! A bird is flying at 22 miles per hour at a bearing of N18 degrees W. After flying for 1/2 hour, it lands on a tree to rest. When it takes off again it flies at 18 mph at a bearing of S72 degrees W for 20 minutes and then lands a telephone pole. Find the bearing and distance to the original point of departure.

let me try to draw a diagram we can work with:
From point O, draw a 11mi line N18ºW to point A.
From point A, draw a 6mi line S72ºW to point B.
From point B, draw a line back to point O.
By my calculations, OAB turns out to be a right triangle.
Bearing of B from O the original point of departure is N72ºW
Distance from B to the original point O=11cos54º=6.45mi
