Let s = the original walking speed
Let t = the original time
The faster time = t - 10/60 = t - 1/6
The faster speed = s + 1
Since distance = speed x time, we have the following two equations
s*t = 2 -> t = 2/s
(s+1)(t-1/6) = 2
Substitute the value for t above into the 2nd equation and solve for s:
2s = 2s - s^2/6 + 2 - s/6
s^2 + s - 12 = 0
This can be factored as
(s-3)(s+4) = 0
Take the positive solution, s = 3
So the walking rate is 3 kph
