Question 71795: someone please show or explain the easiest way to understand this
express the following statement as a formula with the value of the constant of proportionality determined with the given conditions: w varies directly as x and inversley as the square of y. If x =15 and y=5, then w = 36.
Possible answers:
w = 3 x/y^2
w = 12 x/y^2
w = 36 x/y^2
w = 60 x/y^2
Thanks to anyone who can help me. This is way way over my head

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
w varies directly as x and inversley as the square of y. If x =15 and y=5, then w = 36.
--------
If a varies directly as b then a=kb
If a varies inversely as b then a=k/b
-------
For your problem, w and x are on the same level; w and y^2 are on different levels:
w = k (x/y^2)
36 = k (15/25)
36 = k (3/5)
k = (5/3)*36
k = 60
-----
EQUATION:
w = 60x/y^2
