Question 717257: i need help solving system of linear equations and inequalities the word problems. Here is the problem..... The manager of a gourmet coffee and tea store is mixing two green teas, one worth $7 per pound and the other worth $9 per pound. He wants to obtain 32 pounds of tea worth 8.50 per pound. You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let +a+ = pounds of $7/lb tea needed
Let +b+ = pounds of $9/lb tea needed
+7a+ = cost of $7/lb tea used
+9b+ = cost of $9/lb tea used
--------------
(1) +a+%2B+b+=+32+
(2) +%28+7a+%2B+9b+%29+%2F+32+=+8.5+
--------------------------
(2) +7a+%2B+9b+=+8.5%2A32+
(2) +7a+%2B+9b+=+272+
Multiply both sides of (1) by +7+
and subtract (1) from (2)
(2) +7a+%2B+9b+=+272+
(1) +-7a+-+7b+=+-224+
+2b+=+48+
+b+=+24+
and, since
(1) +a+%2B+24+=+32+
(1) +a+=+8+
8 pounds of $7/lb tea are needed
24 pounds of $9/lb tea are needed
check answer:
(2) +%28+7%2A8+%2B+9%2A24+%29+%2F+32+=+8.5+
(2) +%28+56+%2B+216+%29+%2F+32+=+8.5+
(2) +272+%2F+32+=+8.5+
(2) +272+=+272+
OK
