In the 8 pints of 50% solution, there are 4 pints of water and 4 pints of developer. In the end, you will have pints of 16% solution, which will consist of pints of water that you added plus the 4 pints of water in the original solution plus the 4 pints of developer in the original solution, and since it is a 16% solution, we can say:



Solve for to get the total amount of 16% solution, then subtract the 8 pints of 50% solution that you started with.
