Question 714506: I need help for my grandson and me on some homework he came home with yesterday. It is 6th grade math, they are finding percentage of surveys and tips and discounts. I could not solve one of the problems;
the problem is there are 1000 student in the survey. Of the 1000 students we need to solve how many sixth graders take there lunch to school. We need to find the total number of 6th graders at the school. Now I know there are 12% of the 6th graders that take their lunch to in school, this 12% = 24 this is given as part of the problem. I do not know how to make a formula to find the unknown number of 6th graders. Please help my idea is to make a formula as follows:
24 is 12% of x I do not know how to work this problem.
Thank you in advance for your help.

You can put this solution on YOUR website! In story problems like this, the word "is" can be replaced by an equal sign, and the work "of" can be replaced by multiplication. And finally "%" translates to "divided by 100"
You've already done most of the work by stating "24 is 12% of x" All we need to do is translate that into an equation:
