SOLUTION:
If two angles are supplementary and the larger angle is 20 degrees less than three times the smaller angle, find the measure of each angle.
I have tried:
180-x=3x+20 ->

If two angles are supplementary and the larger angle is 20 degrees less than three times the smaller angle, find the measure of each angle.
I have tried:
180-x=3x+20 -> subtract 20 from both sides
160-x=3x -> add x to both sides
160 = 4x -> divide both sides by 4
40 = x
According to the back of my book the answers should be 50 and 130 and I'm not sure how to get there. Answer by checkley79(3341) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! X+Y=180
X=3Y-20 REPLACE X WITH (3Y-20)
3Y-20+Y=180
4Y=180+20
4Y=200
Y=200/4
Y=50 ANS.
X+50=180
X=180-50
X=130 ANS.
