You can put this solution on YOUR website!
So what is their combined rate? This is more comfortable thinking of the rate as jobs per time. This makes the easy relationship, rate*time=jobs, much as the traveling & motion relationship of rate*time=distance.

Clyde: 1%2F8 jobs per day.
Irv: 1%2F3 jobs per day.
Clyde and Irv together: %281%2F8%2B1%2F3%29 jobs per day. Compute. Remember, the question was asking for the reciprocal of this "together" rate.
