The intercepts are the points at which the line crosses the x axis or the y axis. When you set x=0, find y. That is the point where the line crosses the y axis. When you set y=0, find x. That is the point where the line crosses the x axis.

The sample equation you showed is already in slope intercept form, y=mx+b. In this form, b is the y intercept.
For finding another point other than an intercept, just assign x or y to any number and caclulate the other, so you find a point (x,y) on the line.
