Start at +3 on the number line. So you are 3 units to the right of 0.

Now move 5 units to the left of +3 to go to 2, 1, 0, -1, -2

You'll end up at -2 when you've taken your five steps.

So that's why 3 + (-5) = -2

Another way to think of it is 3 + (-5) is 5 - 3 (big number - small number) and then you make the answer negative because the 5 (which is bigger) is negative.

So 5 - 3 = 2 , make this negative to get -2

So this is another way to find out that 3 + (-5) = -2
