You can put this solution on YOUR website!
When the sum of the distances they walk is +19+ mi
that means they have met.
Let +d+ = the distance the slower hiker travels
+19+-+d+ = the distance the faster hiker travels
Let +s+ = the speed of the slower hiker in mi/hr
+s+%2B+.5+ = the speed of the faster hiker
---------------
Equation for slower hiker:
(1) +d+=+s%2A2+
Equation for faster hiker:
(2) +19+-+d+=+%28+s+%2B+.5+%29%2A2+
------------------------
(2) +19+-+d+=+2s+%2B+1+
(2) +2s+%2B+d+=+18+
Substitute (1) into (2)
(2) +2s+%2B+2s+=+18+
(2) +4s+=+18+
(2) +s+=+4.5+
+s+%2B+.5+=+5+
The speed of the slower hiker is 4.5 mi/hr
The speed of the faster hiker is 5 mi/hr
check answer:
(1) +d+=+s%2A2+
(1) +d+=+4.5%2A2+
(1) +d+=+9+
and
(2) +19+-+d+=+%28+s+%2B+.5+%29%2A2+
(2) +19+-+d+=+%28+4.5+%2B+.5+%29%2A2+
(2) +19+-+d+=+10+
(2) +d+=+19+-+10+
(2) +d+=+9+
OK
