Question 711290: My question is "Two buses leave Atlanta at the same time, one traveling west at 40 miles per hour and the other traveling north at 30 miles per hour. When will they be 400 miles apart?" I found the answer in the back of the book, but have no idea what steps to take to solve this problem. Answer by Alan3354(69443) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! "Two buses leave Atlanta at the same time, one traveling west at 40 miles per hour and the other traveling north at 30 miles per hour. When will they be 400 miles apart?"
-----------------
Their paths form a right triangle.
At t hours after departure,
the westbound bus is 40t miles away, the northbound is 30t miles away.
----
d = 50t
----
400 = 50t
t = 8 hours
----------------
You can use the speeds in a similar manner
v = 50 mi/hr
t = 400/50 = 8 hours
